The Layer class contains a number of methods that can be used to analyze the distribution of layer attributes. Consider the cencus_boundaries layer that was loaded in a previous tutorial.

The layer contains an attribute named “POP2000” that represents the total population of each census block. Using the histogram method it is possible to view the distribution of the population attribute.

The histogram provides a set of intervals/classes that can be used to build up a thematic style for the layer.

The thematic style created from a random set of colors in the last section is far from visual appealing. What would be better is a set of colors forming a gradient with lighter values representing low population areas and darker colors representing higher population areas.
The interpolate function is used to interpolate intermediate values between two symbolizers.
